A Brief Early History of Grays Athletic Football Club.

     At the early part of the 20th Century a football club known as the Grays Juniors were competing in junior football competitions in the local area. They originally played on a ground opposite a public house the "Bull Inn" in Little Thurrock known as "The Hoppit" but later moved to an area known as "The Lawn". Grays United FC. played on the recreation ground at this time but were disbanded in 1905 and in 1906 the Juniors changed there name to "Grays Athletic FC.
Previously, as a junior team they were competing in the Grays and District League but they gained status and entered the South Essex League. This league was very strong at the time with clubs such as Barking, Romford United, Romford Town and South Weald.

     The Clubs headquarters at the time had been a shop in William Street, Grays near the Seabrooke public House the Bricklayers Arms but later moved to the Castle Inn in Argent Street, Grays

     Grays Athletic were founder members of the Athenian League although they remained in it for just two seasons and gained membership to the London League, they remained members of this league until it was disbanded temporarily at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.
