The construction of the State cinema commenced in October 1937, the photograph on the left shows George Street, Grays several years before work began, the architect was Mr. F.G.M. Chancellor of Messrs. Frank Matcham and co. and the consulting engineer was G.H. Buckle of Messrs. E. Wingfield-Bowles & Partners, the Building contractors were a local firm, Messr. Brown Bros Ltd. |
All bricks are Peterborough Sletton and the facings have rustic settings. One and a quarter million bricks are used, eight hundred tons of cement and five hundred tons of steel, one hundred and sixty men were employed on the project for a period of nine months
The State opened for business on September 5th 1938 showing "The Hurricane" starring Dorothy Lamour and Jon Hall.
